What are tombstones?

When someone dies, family and friends need to remember and honour the life of the deceased.People need something to permanently remind them of the deceased, a place where they can return to, a visible sign of love for the deceased, and a sign of respect and appreciation of the life of the deceased. A tombstone is a permanent reminder of the life and death of a loved one, therefore a tombstone is a must buy item erected on most graves daily.Tombstones are expressions of love and respect for a loved one that has passed away.

Materials

A cemetery may follow national codes of practice or independently prescribe the size and use of certain materials, especially in a conservation area. Some may limit the placing of a wooden memorial to six months after burial, after which a more permanent memorial must be placed. Others may require stones of a certain shape or position to facilitate grass-cutting. Headstones of granite, marble and other kinds of stone. Many materials have been used as markers

Stones

Granite-Granite is a hard stone and requires skill to carve by hand. Modern methods of carving include using computer-controlled rotary bits and sandblasting over a rubber stencil. Leaving the letters, numbers and emblems exposed on the stone, the blaster can create virtually any kind of artwork or epitaph

Marble-marble has been prized for its use in sculptures since classical times. This preference has to do with its softness, which made it easier to carve, relative isotropy and homogeneity, and a relative resistance to shattering

How is a tombstone made?

1. A meeting with the client is arranged to discuss stone, text, letter forms and positioning

2. A drawing will be made by hand with details of the layout of the inscription, to include the dimensions and type of stone.

3. Once the design has been approved it is then drawn onto the stone. The lettering is not drawn from the design by tracing, but freehand using the eye. NO RULERS are used to measure the spacing between letters! This must be done by hand so you can adjust spacing by the smallest fraction
.
4.Once the client is happy with the design drawn out, then the cutting can begin. This is all done slowly by hand using only a chisel and mallet.  There are no computers, stencils, or machines involved. It is very slow, careful work.

5. Once the stone has been cut the letters might be painted a natural looking off white, depending on the stone used.

6. The tombstone is then fixed into position.
